Habitat for Humanity Kingston Limestone Region partners with local families to build better futures through our unique homeownership program.
The three criteria to qualify for a Habitat for Humanity home are:
- Need for affordable housing,
- Ability to repay a Habitat for Humanity mortgage, and
- Willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity.
Families are chosen on the basis of the above criteria. Family selection occurs by way of an application process.

Need for affordable housing is defined by a family whose existing living conditions are inadequate in terms of structure, cost, safety or size. The ratio of shelter expense to total income is also factored (paying a large percentage of your income to rent).
Ability to repay a mortgage requires that the family has a stable income sufficient to cover the monthly mortgage payments and other expenses that come with homeownership including property taxes, utilities, insurance, home maintenance, etc.
Homeowners must demonstrate a Willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity by contributing 500 hours of volunteer labour (“sweat equity”) towards the building of their homes, other Habitat for Humanity builds and activities.
